Red, White, and Blue
I’ve always loved colors. Even as a child, I had a fascination for them, as well as an unconventional approach to using them. While most kids happily colored yellow suns glowing in blue skies and painted the grass a lovely shade of green, I was the oddball who insisted on doing things a bit differently. I even have a personal blog titled “Blue Tulips and Purple Giraffes”. Yep, that’s me.
I always loved making tulips blue, and turning giraffes into my favorite shade of purple. Sometimes their spots were orange, at other times red, or sometimes pink and purple made a lovely combination.
Although I’ve always used, misused, or perhaps abused colors in my artwork and fashion (ask my children about my crazy and colorful wardrobe), I still respect traditional color meanings.
I’ve taken the Luscher Color Test, found it very accurate, and I’ve used color symbolism quite often in my writing. Nobody can deny that a “bluebird” sky brightens our mood or that earthy browns help us feel more “grounded” and practical.
For Americans, there are three very special colors that we should all love, cherish, and respect. Those colors, of course, are those of our national flag, the red, white, and blue symbolism of our nation and the beliefs we hold most dear.
Our founding fathers left behind no record of their reasons for choosing red, white, and blue for our flag, but the meanings usually associated with the colors are these:
Red signifies hardiness, bravery, and valor. It also symbolizes the blood shed by the soldiers who fought for our nation’s independence. It continues to represent the brave men and women who still proudly fight for liberty and justice.
White is said to symbolize innocence and purity. Many people also associate it with peace and with the concept of “new beginnings”. When our nation was first formed, the idea of a “democratic republic” was new and untested. No one knew what the outcome would be for “the American experiment.”
Blue is also considered a color of peace. It is also said to represent vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
Our flag — often called “Old Glory” — has a long and glorious history, indeed. You can find a lot of interesting tidbits of information at the US Flag Organization website.
During this Veteran’s Day weekend, authors from Sweet Cravings and Secret Cravings Publishing are banding together to support the military by supporting the Wounded Warriors Project.

My favorite color has always been blue, but I can’t say it’s the only color I love. Pink and purple always work well together, and the wide and varying colors of every season provide me with endless joy and wonder.

Wonderful post, Christina. I remember the first time I took the Luscher Color Test. I was astounded at its insight and accuracy. It was the same when I took the Myers Briggs test. That’s how I feel, too. I love American history — especially the stories of our nation’s beginnings — and each year we celebrate with a family get-together on the Fourth of July. We display the flag, of course, and our home is decked out in reds, whites, and blues. Oh, how thrilling it is to see! And how wondrous to be an American.

I’ve always loved blue
