Red, White, and Blue

I’ve always loved colors. Even as a child, I had a fascination for them, as well as an unconventional approach to using them. While most kids happily colored yellow suns glowing in blue skies and painted the grass a lovely shade of green, I was the oddball who insisted on doing things a bit differently. I even have a personal blog titled “Blue Tulips and Purple Giraffes”. Yep, that’s me.

I always loved making tulips blue, and turning giraffes into my favorite shade of purple. Sometimes their spots were orange, at other times red, or sometimes pink and purple made a lovely combination.

Although I’ve always used, misused, or perhaps abused colors in my artwork and fashion (ask my children about my crazy and colorful wardrobe), I still respect traditional color meanings.

I’ve taken the Luscher Color Test, found it very accurate, and I’ve used color symbolism quite often in my writing. Nobody can deny that a “bluebird” sky brightens our mood or that earthy browns help us feel more “grounded” and practical.

For Americans, there are three very special colors that we should all love, cherish, and respect. Those colors, of course, are those of our national flag, the red, white, and blue symbolism of our nation and the beliefs we hold most dear.

Our founding fathers left behind no record of their reasons for choosing red, white, and blue for our flag, but the meanings usually associated with the colors are these:

Red signifies hardiness, bravery, and valor. It also symbolizes the blood shed by the soldiers who fought for our nation’s independence. It continues to represent the brave men and women who still proudly fight for liberty and justice.

White is said to symbolize innocence and purity. Many people also associate it with peace and with the concept of “new beginnings”. When our nation was first formed, the idea of a “democratic republic” was new and untested. No one knew what the outcome would be for “the American experiment.”

Blue is also considered a color of peace. It is also said to represent vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Our flag — often called “Old Glory” — has a long and glorious history, indeed. You can find a lot of interesting tidbits of information at the US Flag Organization website.

During this Veteran’s Day weekend, authors from Sweet Cravings and Secret Cravings Publishing are banding together to support the military by supporting the Wounded Warriors Project.

Each of us participating has agreed to donate “Thirty dollars for thirty comments” to our blog. Please leave a comment below to help me reach the goal.

I’ll also donate 10% of my royalties from any of my historical romances purchased through the publisher’s website between November 9 and November 11. You can quickly and easily find my books through the links below:

Supporting our military is important, and honoring those who have been wounded in the service of our country is one of the ways we can show our thanks. Today, I’m sharing a post from another of my blogs. I’ve pledged to donate “$30.00 for 30 Comments” to Wounded Warriors. Please help me and my fellow SCP authors reach the goal.

When I see the flag or uniforms, it gives me such a proud feeling knowing our history and what it took for America to get to where she is today. I believe colors do have effects on people. I like blue. Hope you all reach your goal.

    • Thanks so much, Cindy. Blue is my favorite color, too. I also like lavender. Of course, our traditional red, white, and blue is always a thrill to see. So glad you dropped by to show your support for Wounded Warriors.

  4. My favorite color has always been blue, but I can’t say it’s the only color I love. Pink and purple always work well together, and the wide and varying colors of every season provide me with endless joy and wonder.
Thank you for participating in the Wounded Warrior Blog Hop! Our wounded heroes deserve our respect and support.

  6. My favorite colors are red, white and blue.

    • Nice choice! Always gives me a feeling of pride when I see those colors.

  7. Great Post!

  8. Wonderful post, Christina. I remember the first time I took the Luscher Color Test. I was astounded at its insight and accuracy. It was the same when I took the Myers Briggs test. How could a book know my inner being for pete’s sake? My favorite color is purple. Thanks for participating in this worthy cause.

    • Thanks for dropping by, Flossie. I was amazed by the Luscher Test, too. Somewhere, I still have my original copy of the book and the little color samples. I’d like to take the test again. Yeah, I’m definitely going to take it again.

  9. Thanks so much for supporting a great cause and for sharing such an interesting post. When I see red, white, and blue, it always make me swell with pride because I am blessed to live in such a great country.

    • That’s how I feel, too. I love American history — especially the stories of our nation’s beginnings — and each year we celebrate with a family get-together on the Fourth of July. We display the flag, of course, and our home is decked out in reds, whites, and blues. Oh, how thrilling it is to see! And how wondrous to be an American.

How great that you are doing this hop and donating part of your proceeds for this weekend’s sales. Thanks for that, and I hope your sales are tremendous! I don’t read a lot of historical, but I will try yours out! 🙂

    • Thanks so much for stopping by to show your support for our brave men and women who’ve fought for freedom. I hope you enjoy the stories I tell in my romance novels. Please come back to visit again and share your thoughts.

  11. I’ve always loved blue

    • Definitely my choice, too. I especially like pale blue. To me, it’s always restful. Of course, I enjoy being near water, too, and I think blue reminds me of rivers, lakes, and streams. Thanks so much for dropping by and showing your support for our veterans.

  12. Thank you so much for supporting such a wonderful cause.

    • Thank you, too, Karen. It’s good to see you! Hope all is well for you now.

  13. Red has always been my favorite….but now, I think more of white and blue….Lovely tale….Keep up the good work….

    • Hi, Tabitha! Did I ever tell you that I have a character named “Tabitha” in Summertime? She’s not at all like you, though. She’s a crochety old… well, never mind. She’s at least in her 80’s, and she was quite an interesting character to write about. But, I digress. Thanks so much for stopping by in support of our veterans.

I’ll be wearing red, white, and blue tomorrow. I do prefer purple, though!
    It’s a great cause. I’m glad you’re participating.
